A gran old time

Traffic advisory issued for GranFondo bike race
1

The annual GranFondo is coming soon. The massive cycling race on the Sea to Sky Highway will be on Sept. 8.

In past years, thousands  of people have registered to take part in the event, in which bikers make their way from Vancouver to Whistler.

Whistler GranFondo is based on popular European and South African mass participation cycling events, which can attract as many as 30,000 cyclists.

Traffic advisories have often been issued in anticipation of the event.

Last year, motorists were told to expect long delays on the Sea to Sky Highway. This year, organizers issued the following traffic alerts for the event day.

* Highway 99 at Porteau Cove Provincial Park – Counterflow traffic adjacent to cyclists in effect, with one lane northbound and one lane southbound available for motorists, leading to single-lane alternating traffic for 1.3 km, from 7:15 am to 11 a.m.

*Highway 99 at Furry Creek – Local Furry Creek traffic will be re-routed via internal roads to access Highway 99 northbound and southbound, from 7:15 am until 11:30 a.m.

*Highway 99 at Britannia Beach – Single-lane alternating traffic will be in effect for 1 km, with no northbound right turn permitted at Main Street (Copper Drive), from 7:30 am to 12 p.m.
