Sea to Sky Corridor hockey heritage will be on full display this February.
Sportsnet announced on Aug. 21 that Whistler will be featured as one of 25 communities as part of its Rogers Hometown Hockey broadcasts this year.
Hosts Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will come to Whistler on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9 for a festival featuring "live entertainment, NHL alumni, local celebrities and hockey-themed activities for all ages," according to a release.
The weekend ends with an outdoor viewing of Sportsnet's Sunday night broadcast of the Toronto Maple Leafs at New York Rangers game at 3:30 p.m.
Set to enter its fifth season, this year's Hometown Hockey broadcasts will stretch from as far west as CFB Esquimalt all the way to Mount Pearl, NL.
"With our 100th episode on the horizon, it's the perfect time to reflect on the incredible moments we've shared together on the Rogers Hometown Hockey journey," MacLean said in a release.
"From St. John's to Victoria to Whitehorse, Tara and I have had the privilege of honouring the tradition of hockey in Canada for the past four seasons—and we can't wait to unearth all the surprises that this season will have in store."
Added Slone in the release: "As we hit the road for a season complete with special milestones and visits to new communities like CFB Esquimalt and Enoch Cree Nation, we look forward to uniting all Canadian communities through the sport they love—hockey."
PRIMAL QUEST COMING TO SEA TO SKY
An incredible adventure race is set to come to Squamish next month.
Primal Quest will run its eighth edition in the Coast Mountains, beginning Sept. 6. The backcountry conquest features teams biking, rappelling, paddling and climbing around the backcountry over courses of 300 to 450 kilometres.
The race is set to attract an international field, though Sea to Sky residents Jen Segger, Eduardo Baldioceda, Hailey Van Dyk and Phil Miller are set to take part.
Other teams include the California Warriors of the California Military Department who feature combat veteran and 2015 Spartan World Champion Robert Killian, and Get Out There/10 Million Meters featuring multiple Primal Quest champion Mike Kloser and Alex Flynn, who has Parkinson's Disease and is raising money for Parkinson's research.
"Mike Kloser is a genuine leader that beholds the best interests of the sport and his teammates at heart. His mentorship, the giving of his energy, time and knowledge to this team to help them succeed, is really significant. This team is creating access and a crossover link from (obstacle-course racing) and endurance sports into adventure racing and Primal Quest and we are really fortunate to have Mike and this entire team in British Columbia," race director Maria Burton said in a release.
The winners of the shorter pursuit race are expected to finish on Sept. 10 while the winners of the longer pure race are anticipated to return on Sept. 11. Teams have until Sept. 15 to finish.
