Editor's note: This is the first in a series of columns called Nordic News, focusing on Nordic skiing. WINTER IS COMING: It is time to dust off your skis and boots, check your Nordic equipment and get excited for the upcoming season. One of the best ways to do this is by visiting the Callaghan Winter Sport Club's Nordic Expo and Swap, held on Oct. 19 at the Squamish Adventure Centre.
Have Nordic gear you want to get rid of or looking for some used equipment? Drop off used skis, boots, poles, clothing and accessories in the morning (between 8 and 10 a.m.) to have them sold for you during the day, with 15 per cent going to the Callaghan Winter Sport Club's winter programs.
Interested in new gear? Squamish's four Nordic ski shops (Nordic Shop, Escape Route, Valhalla Pure and Outwest) will display this year's new offerings and there will be deals on last year's clearance equipment.
Wondering where to ski and what programs are out there for kids, youth and adults? Whistler Olympic Park and Callaghan Country, again working together as Ski Callaghan, will have a display and season passes on sale and the two local clubs, Callaghan Winter Sport Club and Squamish Nordic Ski Club, will have membership signups and program outlines for this winter.
The Nordic Expo and Swap happens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Used equipment dropoff is from 8 to 10 a.m.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Do you like Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, or just enjoy being out in the snow? Then get involved, as Whistler Olympic Park is recruiting for enthusiastic, energetic and committed volunteers for the winter season. A variety of volunteer roles are available, assisting with Whistler Olympic Park's ski school, recreation services, patrol or events. Also, parent and youth teams may volunteer together.
In addition to a unique volunteer experience, Whistler Olympic Park, a not-for profit community legacy, offers a variety of benefits to those who volunteer, such as season passes, training opportunities, free ski lessons and rentals, event access, retail discounts and more.

SIX WEEKS UNTIL OPENING DAY: Whistler Olympic Park will open its gates on Nov. 21. Again this year, WOP will work together with Callaghan Country to offer a trail network of more than 130 kilometres to explore by ski or snowshoe.
