It is always nice to come home. Even better to come home and win. That was the favourable situation for Squamish's local rugby team this weekend when they returned to the field at Howe Sound Secondary in their first home game since fall.

The Axemen beat one of their main rivals, Meraloma Rugby Club from Vancouver, 41-5 in a seven-try game on Saturday.

This garners the team top spot in their division, Mens Mainland Division 3.

The win extends the Axemen's lead at the top of the table to eight points.

A highlight of the game in front of the hometown crowd was a hattrick by 19-year-old flanker Matthew Jolley, according to the team's Cian Starogardzki, who plays for and manages the team.

The Axemen is playing at home in Squamish for the next three Saturdays.

Next week, on March 23, Capilano visits from West Vancouver.

Kick off is at 12:45 p.m. at Howe Secondary.
