WOP hosting big biathlon event

North American Biathlon Championships coming to Callaghan Valley this weekend

Whistler Olympic Park (WOP) is preparing to be invaded by some of the continent's best biathletes when the North American Biathlon Championships come to the Callaghan Valley from April 1 to 3.

The event kicks off on Friday (April 1) with an opening ceremony followed by the sprint competition for the North American Championship athletes, which starts at 10 a.m. Locals are also invited to experience the course after the pros, with a mass participation event starting at 12:30 p.m.

Saturday (April 2) will feature the pursuit competition starting at 10 a.m. for the elite athletes and the Callaghan Valley Open divisions following them at 12:30 p.m. Later that evening, a banquet and awards ceremony will take place at Quest University to honour the winners and celebrate their achievements.

The final day of the competition will feature the zeroing-class events. As with the opening day, the Callaghan Valley Open divisions will host identical races later that afternoon. Those interested in competing pay $35 for a single event, $60 for two or $100 to take part in all three. In addition, locals can attend the banquet at Quest for a cost of $25.

The event is free for all spectators and non-skiing spectators can get a free event pass as they enter the gate.

Another event coming to the WOP is the third annual Woppet, which takes place on Saturday, April 9. The family-friendly event invites recreational and experienced skiers to participate in a free-technique cross country ski race for all levels. Those interested can race in a 30-kilometre "Quest," 15 km "Challenge" or a 7.5 km "Cruiser."
