Squamish real estate agent Brian Loverin has thrown his hat in the ring for a seat on council.

On Tuesday, Loverin said he had been knocking on doors all month, gathering ideas, and was “excited” to enter the municipal race.

“Squamish has been reinvented, a lot of the older people who lived here for years and created this beautiful town, have moved away to be with their children. I’ve been witnessing this through my real estate work,” he said.

“The sense of community has really been lost in this town.”

Loverin said that is part of the reason why he founded the Squamish Children's Festival in 2015. He also runs the popular Sea to Sky Road Conditions Facebook page and volunteers with the Squamish Food Bank.

Loverin has been working in real estate for the past seven years, and relocated to Squamish six years ago from North Vancouver. The decision to move was partly driven by a desire to raise his two children in a small town with more outdoor access.

“I take action in this community, to push things forward, and we really need a stronger, younger outlook on this community that can support what is now here,” he said. “I really relate to the new families that are here.”

Loverin said his experience as a real estate agent means he has extensive knowledge about how the town has changed, the new buildings that have gone up, and the network of people involved in the business.

“I can see how the infrastructure needs to be planned,” he said.

Loverin said the town needs more multi-use facilities to accommodate the growing population and stronger emergency services in the downtown core.

He doesn’t expect his new obligations as councillor to interfere with his business.

“I plan my work and I work my plan,” he said. “I want to make a community that works together to prepare for the future.

Voting day for the municipal election is Oct. 20.

The deadline to announce a campaign for school trustee, councillor or mayor is Sept. 14.
