Freitag elected to Area D post

Britannia Beach resident beats out four others for position on SLRD board

Maurice Freitag, a Britannia Beach stone mason, was elected to represent Electoral Area D on the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) board of directors on Saturday (Nov. 19).

Freitag, who took a leave of absence from his position as president of the Squamish Chamber of Commerce to run for the post, won a five-candidate race to replace three-term Area D board member John Turner, who opted not to seek re-election. Freitag finished with 85 votes compared to 66 for retired Furry Creek dentist Bruce Bessie, 33 for realtor Nancy Hamilton, 23 for outgoing Village of Pemberton Coun. Lisa Ames and one for Squamish movie industry worker Deb McBride.

Electoral Area D covers unincorporated areas surrounding Squamish including Britannia Beach, Furry Creek, the Upper Squamish and Paradise valleys, Ring Creek and Pinecrest/Black Tusk.
