‘Affordable’ Vancouver grocery store being replaced with parent company’s pricier brand

The changes are already happening inside

Buy-Low Foods is moving out of Kingsgate Mall.

The grocery store, which aims to sell "safe, healthy, and affordable food" according to its website, is being replaced by Save-On-Foods. A sign at the front door notes the change is coming soon.

"Hello, we're renovating to give you a fresh new store," reads the sign, branded with a hand-drawn Save-On-Foods logo.

The sign doesn't state when the change is coming, however, Buy-Low is in the process of relocating product aisles as part of the switch.

Buy-Low's first store opened in 1966 on Arbutus Street. In 1995, it was sold to Jim Pattison's group of companies. There are currently 20 locations across Alberta and B.C., with seven stores in the Metro Vancouver area.

"Our philosophy is to provide, you, our shopper with low, low food prices. Our ultimate, overarching goal is to add value to people's lives," reads the grocery store chain's web search index.

Save-On-Foods, which already has nearby locations at East 13th Avenue and Main Street and at Cambie Street and West Seventh Avenue, is also owned by the Pattison Food Group.

Nesters Market is across the road from Kingsgate Mall at Kingsway and Broadway. It's also owned by the Pattison Food Group. Urban Fare, which has a location nearby in the Olympic Village, is also a Pattison store.

Among Pattison's other grocery stores are PriceSmart, Choices Market, and Meinhardt Fine Foods.
