CALGARY — A man is in hospital following a police shooting in Calgary.
Police say officers were patrolling an industrial area in the city's southeast early Friday morning when a passenger in a vehicle pointed what was believed to be a handgun at them.
The canine unit, a police helicopter and other officers were called and a high-risk vehicle stop was executed.
"One of the passengers was the one believed to have the gun walked away from the vehicle. HAWCS was able to guide the officers to the man at which point a confrontation occurred resulting in one officer deploying their service firearm," said Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan in an online video.
The man was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition but was upgraded to stable.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating. McLellan voiced her support for her officers.
"We want you to know that our officers are committed to protecting you. They're out there in the dead of night and the light of day looking for suspicious behaviour and people who pose a danger to you," she said.
"This is what they do and they're very good at their jobs."
McLellan expressed concern that firearms are being increasingly connected to vehicle-based incidents that didn't used to exist.
"This is a very real threat to our members and to the citizens we serve," she said.
"We trust in their training, experience and their ability to make very quick decisions in difficult circumstances without the gift of hindsight."
