West Vancouver firefighters responded to a diving accident that resulted in a near drowning in Whytecliff Park on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called after a 26-year-old woman who was part of a diving class experienced problems related to decompression illness, said assistant chief Martin Leduc, of  West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.

(Medical emergencies, as well as less serious symptoms of decompression illness, can result when divers surface too quickly after being at depth, but can also occur for other reasons.)

Firefighters provided oxygen therapy at site, said Leduc, and a BC Ambulance Service helicopter was called in to the park to take the woman to Lions Gate Hospital. No update on her condition was available at press time.
