Delta police are continuing to remind motorists to be extra vigilant out on the roads as students have returned to school.

In a post on their Facebook page, police say this week, officers were monitoring a school zone when they observed a vehicle drive through a marked crosswalk — despite the presence of a crossing guard, flashing amber lights, a police vehicle with its emergency lights flashing, and children waiting to cross.

“When stopped, the driver told officers the vehicle was in ‘autopilot mode,’” said Delta police. “In British Columbia, it is illegal to operate a vehicle in autonomous mode. Drivers must always remain in complete care and control of their vehicle. School zones demand your undivided attention — children’s safety depends on it.”

In this case, the driver received a $368 fine and six penalty points for driving without due care and attention.

“Let’s work together to keep our school zones safe: stay alert, slow down, and always be in control,” added DPD.
