Harmandeep Kaur was a student, supplementing her income by working security.

The family of Harmandeep Kaur, 24, says all they want is justice after Kaur was murdered while working as a security guard at UBC Okanagan last weekend.

Kaur was assaulted around 6 a.m. Saturday morning and died of her injuries in the hospital Sunday evening.

Okanagan Sikh Temple president Amarjit Lalli says he spoke with Kaur's parents Wednesday.

"Her parents just arrived yesterday in Squamish. They weren't told what had happened until they got off the plane," he said, explaining her parents were already making their way to B.C. at the time of her death.

"What the family really reiterated to me is that they want justice for the death and they want those that are responsible to be held accountable. They said there is nothing else. You know their daughter is gone and the only thing that they want to make sure is... Canada is supposed to be one of the safest places in the world and they thought they sent their daughter to the safest place and now they just want justice," Lalli added.

A male suspect, an employee of the university, was arrested after the attack under the Mental Health Act. Charges have not been announced yet.

Lalli says the family has chosen to have the funeral in Squamish where one of Kaur's uncles lives.

The service will take place at the Squamish Funeral Chapel and Crematorium on March 5 at 10:30 a.m. It will be broadcast live on Okanagan Sikh Temple's Facebook page.

"We have also a new program at the Gurdwara here in Kelowna called Enhancing Healthy and Vibrant Communities. What it deals with is mental health. We will be doing a Zoom call next Thursday at 7 p.m. and it is going to be dealing with grieving and how to deal with tragedy," Lalli said.

More information on the zoom seeing can be found here.

On Wednesday Paladin Security, the company Kaur was working for when she was killed, shared a statement on social media.

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that we are mourning the loss of one of our own. Security Officer Harmandeep Kaur was assaulted while on shift on Feb 26th and later succumbed to her injuries. She was an amazing person who worked hard to make the local community a safer place."
