Victoria father Michael Kriberg was watching his kids play hockey at a tournament in Nanaimo when he learned he was an instant millionaire.

Kriberg was checking his Nov. 29 ticket on the B.C. Lottery Corp app on his phone when he discovered he had won the $1 million Maxmillions prize on the Lotto Max draw.

“The first thing that crossed my mind was ‘Holy smokes!’ ” said Kriberg. He shared the news with his wife, who was “excited and in disbelief.”

Kriberg purchased the winning ticket at Country Grocer at the Royal Oak Shopping Centre.

Kriberg said he plans to pay off his mortgage, travel and help his family.

In 2022, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $173 million from Lotto Max. Lotto Max is a nationwide lottery game drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays.
