Willow Paull's winning Mayor for the Day entry.

What would you do if you were mayor of Squamish for the day?

A Garibaldi Highlands Elementary School Grade five student is about to find out.

Willow Paull has been chosen to act as Mayor for a Day on Friday, May 24  as the winner of the District's annual contest.

Willow's winning submission included a letter about her desire to learn more about the people who work for the District of Squamish and came with photos she took of various District and emergency vehicles and facilities.

Deputy Mayor, Squamish Montessori Grade one student, Hudson van Dyck, will join Willow.

Seven-year-old Hudson submitted a video with his dream for a farm where everyone could donate their time in exchange for food.

“It’s truly inspiring to hear from our next generation of bright and thoughtful leaders and change makers in our community,” said District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott in a news release. “Each student demonstrated passion, creativity and an honest desire to create good in our community. I am confident that the future of our town is in very capable hands.”

Willow and Hudson will be treated to a visit to the Squamish RCMP Detachment, photos in the Mayor’s chair in the chamber at municipal hall, a scavenger hunt and a ride in a fire truck. They will return to school with a pizza lunch to share with their classmates.

Mayor for a Day is part of Local Government Awareness Week, which is from May 19 to 25.
