This is a big deal.

Squamish's own Andrew Prossin, founder and managing director of One Ocean Expeditions, which has its office on Second Avenue, received one of the top honours bestowed by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS).

The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, and TV game show host Alex Trebek presented the Lawrence J. Burpee Medal to Prossin during a ceremony at Quebec's Canadian Museum of History late last week.

"I am so proud of this recognition for the company and grateful to all those who have been involved in the growth of One Ocean Expeditions over the past 10 years," said Prossin in a news release.

The Burpee Medal is named after the first editor of the Canadian Geographic magazine and is awarded to individuals who "have made outstanding contributions to supporting the mandate of making the geography of Canada better known to Canadians and people around the world.

One Ocean offers polar exploration cruises and is the only educational, environmental science and expedition partner of the non-profit Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

A One Ocean vessel was most famously used in the exploration that lead to the discovery of Sir John Franklin's long-lost HMS Erebus in 2014.

Several other Canadian explorers, scientists, and fellow geographers were honoured as well.
