The City of Richmond handed out more than $40,000 in fines for illegally parking near the Richmond Night Market this year.

City bylaw officers handed out more than 1,240 parking tickets in the area during the opening hours of the annual summer night market, near the River Rock Casino Resort, between April and October.

Almost 90 per cent of the fines were for parking in no-stopping or no-parking zones, city spokesperson Clay Adams told the Richmond News.

Of all the tickets, 11 were for parking in disabled parking spaces without a permit and almost 25 vehicles had parked within five metres of a fire hydrant.

“These statistics are a reminder of the need to pay attention and adhere to clearly marked parking signs,” said Adams.

“More to the point, we encourage visitors to leave their car at home and take transit.”
