Crochet all day: How classic knitwear is being worn for fall

The patterned knit gets a new lease on life, beyond grandma's couch throw.

Crochet is being used in surprising ways for fall.

Olivia Rodrigo’s smash hit “Drivers License” broke streaming records, hit the top of the Billboard charts and scored MTV Video Music Award nominations.

At just 18 years old, she’s a break-out pop star with a ton of social media influence. (She recently hung out at the White House with President Joe Biden to encourage young Americans to get their COVID-19 vaccine.)

For a recent Variety magazine cover, she hit a ‘90s note in a vintage Moschino set (styled by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo) and that’s got us noticing crochet tops, pants, shorts, dresses and bags all over Instagram.

We've rounded up a range of pieces, sizes and prices available in Canada right now.

Mango’s selection of handmade crochet tops (a tank top with daisies and a crop top with a traditional pattern) are just two of the multiple selections from the trend-targeted Spanish brand, a sure sign that this will be a go-to look for fall 2021.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers looking for a youthful take on crochet.

Why we're endorsing it: Right on trend, fresh design.

Where it could use improvements: Items typically ship from Europe so duty may be assessed after delivery.

Size/weight/dimensions: XS-L.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers looking for a fresh update on an old-fashion knit.

Why we're endorsing it: Right on trend and youthful.

Where it could use improvements: Items typically ship from Europe so duty may be assessed after delivery.

Size/weight/dimensions: XS-L

For a more full-length look, this sleeveless dress hits the trend but can also be styled for different seasons sandals for summer, sneaker or boots for winter and throw on an oversized denim button-down or double up with another sweater to complete the look.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers who wants the knit, but not the crop top.

Why we're endorsing it: Can be worn multiple ways and layered for fall.

Where it could use improvements: Items typically ship from Europe so duty may be assessed after delivery.

Size/weight/dimensions: 2-10.

The pronounced crochet sleeves on this Sea top are a really unique execution of the trend. This is a more refined and pricey investment piece meant to last more than a season.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers looking for a designer crochet piece.

Why we're endorsing it: It's classic enough to wear next season (and the one after that).

Where it could use improvements: High price point.

Size/weight/dimensions: XXS(00)-XL(12).

Interested in the look but not exactly sold on wearing it? This Urban Outfitters crochet bag splits the difference and nails the bright colours, without the commitment of a crop top.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers who don't want to commit to wearing it.

Why we're endorsing it: A fun way to try this trend.

Where it could use improvements: Might feel a little itchy against bare arms.

Size/weight/dimensions: One size.

Of course, Anthropolgie has several crochet options we would expect nothing less from the bougie boho fashion line. This black cardigan most closely resembles Olivia’s cover look (the rainbow colours against the black is a unique find). There’s also a white poncho knit that works for layering.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers looking for a heavier piece.

Why we're endorsing it: The black/rainbow colour mix is closest to Olivia Rodrigo's look.

Where it could use improvements: Choose pre-pay at checkout to avoid surprise duty charges. "One size" numerical range not specified.

Size/weight/dimensions: One size (34" length).

For a piece that says, “I love crochet. DEAL WITH IT!” look no further than these Free People’s Crochet Zuri Mom Jeans, which are knit in the front and business in the back.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers who want to go big with this look.

Why we're endorsing it: It's a ridiculously fun look.

Where it could use improvements: Choose pre-pay at checkout to avoid surprise duty charges; a touch pricey for a seasonal piece.

Size/weight/dimensions: Denim 24-35.

Brazilian line Farm Rio is all about bold prints and joyful colours and its denim jacket mixes well with basics (the matching shorts are already sold out).

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers who want to mix crochet with something classic.

Why we're endorsing it: Farm Rio makes bold, beautiful pieces.

Where it could use improvements: Pieces can be hard to find in Canada (that's why we're here). Choose pre-pay at checkout to avoid surprise duty charges.

Size/weight/dimensions: S(0)-L(14).

This pink, slightly-cropped cardigan is exactly the kind of trend-oriented piece we expect from Zara. The bright pink transitions between seasons and it's manufactured under Zara’s Join Life and Care for Water programs, which aim to reduce emissions and water usage, respectively.

Who it's ideal for: Shoppers looking for a bright and playful cardigan.

Why we're endorsing it: The pink and yellow colour combo; good transition piece for late summer/early fall.

Where it could use improvements: Zara sizing is notoriously inconsistent.

Size/weight/dimensions: S-L.
