While Vancouver is the most populous and well-known city in B.C., Surrey is catching up.
The Metro Vancouver municipality is already older (it was founded a few years before Vancouver) and physically larger than Vancouver, and its population will likely pass Vancouver's in the next few years.
So here are a few things you may not know about Vancouver's neighbour.
1. It shares a unique road name
Many cities have unique road names, but very few have unique numbered roads. There are tens of thousands of cities that have a First or Second street or avenue. Vancouver has a few dozen numbered avenues.
Unusually, Victoria only has a Fifth Avenue.
But Surrey, along with its neighbours in Langley and Abbotsford, shares 0 Avenue. It appears to be the only one of its kind.
2. The man with the world's longest beard lives there
The man with the world's longest beard lives in Surrey. His name is Sarwan Singh. His beard was more than 2.4 metres (8 feet) long the last time it was measured.
3. The Port Mann Bridge is Canada's tallest bridge
At more than 160 m tall, the two towers holding up the massive span of the Port Mann Bridge make it the tallest bridge in Canada.
In fact, they're among the tallest structures in the country.
4. There's a rescue centre for exotic animals that you can visit
While some animal shelters and rescues take in pets like cats and dogs, they're not always set up for less common animals.
The Urban Safari Rescue Society takes care of those. They have hundreds of animals under their care, including bugs. Current residents include a Chinese water dragon, an albino milk snake and more.
And it allows visitors. While a fire damaged it in 2023, the Society has reopened.
5. There's a fairy forest
If you head far enough south in Surrey, you may find Redwood Park, which hides a little fairy forest.
In the evergreen forest, there are dozens and dozens of little wooden houses in a little clearing created by the local community.
The forest is also the largest stand of redwoods in Canada.
