Chawanda Shines: Squamish Dragon Boat team triumphs at Nanaimo Festival

The women's team from Squamish emerged victorious at the 20th annual Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival, securing a gold medal in a fiercely competitive Division C race.

They are golden. 

The Squamish Dragon Boat Association women's team Chawanda raced over the weekend at the 20th annual Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival.

Chawanda won a gold medal in a closely contested battle in Division C, spokesperson for the association Cathie Greenlees said in an email.

(Greenlees also works in the sales department at The Squamish Chief.)

This is the third race this year this team has medalled in. The next race will be at the Harrison Dragon Boat Festival in two weeks, followed by the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival

The team is always looking for racers and invites anyone interested to join them on the dock at the Cattermole Slough three times a week. 

They paddle on Tuesdays and Thursdays  at 5:45 p.m. and Sundays at 3:45 p.m.
