Climber rescued off the Stawamus Chief

Squamish SAR volunteers assist the climber, who had taken a 'significant fall' on Aug. 22.

Squamish SAR volunteers were in action on Monday evening (Aug. 22), rescuing a fallen climber.

The climber took a "significant fall" on the Grand Wall of the Stawamus Chief, according to a post by SAR.

"Our team was able to long line the subject just before nightfall and transferred him over to an awaiting Air Ambulance," reads the post on SAR's social media channels.

Squamish photographer Oisin McHugh captured the long-line rescue.

The current condition of the climber has not been released.

SAR manager B.J. Chute told The Squamish Chief that there were seven Squamish call-outs from Aug. 20 to 22, including this fallen climber.

These calls included helping someone who sustained a hand injury at Tricouni Peak, an ankle injury, a fallen climber at the Tantalus Range, helping Whistler SAR with a fallen climber, as well as going to the aid of a man and dogs who fell into the Squamish River.

So far, in 2022, SAR volunteers have undertaken 86 tasks. By this time in 2021, they had been called out 109 times; in 2020, they were at 88 by this point in the year.
