Drivers headed for North Vancouver this weekend, heads up.

The Highway 1 eastbound off-ramp to Main Street will be closed from Friday evening until Monday morning to allow construction of a new entrance to Phibbs Exchange at Oxford Street and realignment of Main, part of a major overhaul of the bus loop.

The closure takes effect at 7 p.m. Friday and is expected to last until 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

While the exit is closed, the ministry recommends using Exit 23 to Mountain Highway as an alternative and drivers headed east or west along Main are being advised to expect delays.

Following the weekend closure, the realigned off-ramp will exit to a redesigned intersection on Main Street, approximately 40 metres west of the existing intersection.

During the closure, pedestrians and cyclists will need to access the transit exchange via Main Street instead of the current access on Oxford Street.

Phibbs has been under construction since November 2022, part of a $32.5 million project to upgrade the transit exchange, which sees upwards of 14,000 passengers pass through each day.

The province is kicking in $18.8 million for the project, while the feds are paying in $11.7 million and the District of North Vancouver has put up $2 million.
