A police officer who survived a deadly avalanche near Kaslo on Jan. 9 is making "incremental progress," but his recovery will be a "long road."
In a statement, the City of Nelson says Const. Mathieu Nolet is still in a local ICU.
"The City of Nelson, the Mayor and Council, the Nelson Police Department and the Nelson Police Board all wish Mathieu a speedy and healthy recovery,” states a spokesperson.
Nolet, a member of the Nelson Police Department, and colleague Const. Wade Tittemore were caught in an avalanche on Jan. 9 while out backcountry skiing. The pair were some 60 kilometres north of Nelson, near Empire Cabin, when the snow came down on them.
Tittemore died in the avalanche and Nolet was left in critical condition with internal injuries and broken ribs.
An outpouring of support has been sent to the community since the tragedy.
"We want to thank everyone who has written comments, sent letters and cards, called, sent emails and visited, etc. The outpouring of love from our community has been incredible. Thank you to you all,” said the city in its statement.
A funeral for Tittemore will be held Wednesday. The service is only for invited guests and not open to the public.
