Safety alert: Health Canada recalls dehumidifiers due to 'fire hazard'

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the affected product and ask the manufacturer for a refund.

On Aug. 4, 2021, Health Canada issued a recall for various dehumidifiers from the marketplace because they may overheat, posing a fire hazard.

Health Canada is recalling various dehumidifiers from the marketplace because they may overheat, posing a fire hazard. 

The recall, issued Aug. 4, involves various AeonAir, Danby (Danby Premiere, Danby Generations, Danby Classic, Danby ArcticAire), and De’Longhi brand dehumidifiers, explains a news release. The manufacturer is New Widetech Industries Co. Ltd. based in Taipei, Taiwan. 

Up to 413,915 units of the affected product were sold in Canada, up to 2,103,028 million units were sold in the United States, and approximately 25,659 units were sold in Mexico from 2009 to 2017.

As of July 14, the company has received two reports of incidents in Canada, that resulted in fire and/or smoke damage to property. No incidents of injury have been reported, however.

In the United States, the company has received 107 reports of incidents that resulted in fire and/or smoke damage to property. No incidents of injury have been reported in the United States, either.  

In Mexico, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries.

What you should do

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the affected product and ask the manufacturer for a refund. 

"Immediately stop using the dehumidifier, unplug the unit, and contact the manufacturer handling the recall, New Widetech Industries Co. Ltd., for a refund," explains Health Canada.

The UPC code and serial number can be found at the back of the dehumidifier on the rating label. Affected dehumidifier model numbers, UPC codes and serial numbers can be found on the New Widetech’s recall website.
