The Squamish Legion - Diamond Head Branch 277 will host a public memorial service in honour of the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, Sept. 19.
The service will take place at 10:45 a.m. at the Cenotaph at Stan Clarke Park.
The "Royal" of the Canadian Legion name is due to the Queen, according to a news release by the national arm of the veterans' service organization.
In 1961 she consented to the Legion using ‘Royal.'
“The Legion was founded in Winnipeg in 1925 as ‘The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Services League’ and was later incorporated by a special Act of Parliament with its charter issued in 1926. That Act was amended in 1961 after the Queen consented to the use of the prefix ‘Royal,’” the release states.
“As a veteran herself, having served during the Second World War as an army driver and mechanic, the late Queen was a true role model of comportment and grace and will be remembered fondly.”
