The extent of the damage to UNBC's Wood Innovation Research Lab in downtown Prince George is still unknown.
The building was damaged during the Aug. 22 explosion at the former site of the Achillion Greek Cuisine restaurant.
The lab’s west wall caught fire and it took time for fire crews to douse it. No UNBC personnel or students were on site at the time of the explosion.
UNBC said the university’s community sends positive thoughts to the individuals who were injured and those who have been impacted and thanks the emergency personnel who responded so quickly and who have limited the damage to WIRL.
“It’s too early to have an estimate regarding when the building will be back in use,” said UNBC’s director of communications Matt Wood. “We are working on gaining access to the building’s interior so that we can conduct a comprehensive evaluation.”
He said it will take time as there is a process to follow with insurance and developing work plans.
Moving forward, those who are directly impacted by the damage to the lab, such as students, faculty and staff involved in research or coursework at the site, will be communicated with directly.
UNBC says the lab remains closed as the scene is an active investigation site and is asking people to stay away from the site to allow emergency personnel to conduct their work.
