A message from the Hart

Local nutrition writer inks publishing deal, embarks on speaking tour

If a lot can happen in a year, imagine what can happen in 10. That's what Squamish-based nutritionist and author Adam Hart does daily.

Ten years ago he was a recovering pre-diabetic who, for two years since his diagnosis, had been using nutrition and the great outdoors to stave off his food allergies, asthma and once-high cholesterol. Rather than journey down the road of lifetime medication, he opted for a healthier lifestyle with an abundance of plant-based, living foods to aid his recovery.

Along the way he discovered a passion for sharing his secrets with others - secrets to a healthier, happier lifestyle of vibrant energy - and founded his health and wellness company, the Power of Food.

Fast forward 10 years and with one self-published book already under his belt, plus a multitude of speaking events, seminars and workshops (including the popular, "Have Your Cake and Eat It Too"), his focus is now on his new book deal with Canadian publishing house Whitecap Books, experts in culinary publications. Add to this a hush-hush upcoming food line, a partnership to run workshops for the Canadian Mental Health Association, and a further book launch in 2014, the next 12 to 18 months are a busy time for him.

"I've been working a long time building my company and to see it all coming together after 10 years of long, hard work is really satisfying. I feel very honoured to see this success and understand now what it takes to achieve this," he said.

And it all happened because he wanted it to happen. It's been Hart's deliberate intention to develop his life in this way and he regularly spends time visualizing and mediating on how he wants to shape his future. That form of intent has been so powerful for him that his 2014 book is dedicated to revealing the secrets of how we can all actively create the lives we want to lead rather than letting our lives lead us.

"The past 10 years have taught me never to give up on your dreams and to always believe that it is within your reach to achieve them," he said. "We just have to trust, believe and allow the process to happen so that our dreams can become a reality."

For now his supporters will just have to be content with the intention to buy his book because, before that launches, he's embarking on a North American promotional tour for his newest book, The Power of Food, which starts this spring. It takes in all major cities - including, of course, Squamish.

The Power of Food contains more than 100 delicious, plant-based recipes along with key steps on how to take action and live a healthier lifestyle. Unlike many healthy lifestyle books, you won't have to search obscure locations to find his ingredients or take 10 hours to prepare your meal.

"Everyone can have fun preparing these recipes and enjoy the fact that they are healthier. The ingredients are easy to use and easy to find, and can be used in ways that are really tasty," making it even more straightforward to follow Hart's healthy lifestyle advice. He also includes his story so that we can learn from his experience and perhaps even feel inspired to begin our own.

If you can't wait that long, the recipe for his family favourite "flourless hemp and peanut butter cookies" is available online at www.poweroffood.com.
