At the end of a Rainbow, a pot of gold

He’s over the rainbow for this one.

In about a year’s time, Tony Rainbow will be gazing at the Newfoundland coastline from the deck of an expedition ship – something he calls the perfect belated 50th wedding anniversary celebration for him and his wife, Mo.

“Couldn’t believe it when we won,” Rainbow said.

“We’re just really excited about it.”

Rainbow was the lucky winner of the Sea to Sky Community Services prize draw this month, a part of the non-profit organization’s fundraising gala to raise cash for services such as childcare, job placement, mental health services, women’s counselling and more.

That means he’ll be setting sail in summer 2018 on a trip put together by a local Squamish company called One Ocean Expeditions.

The group specializes in providing multi-day boat trips to places such as Canada’s East Coast, the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Rainbow’s itinerary, which would normally cost thousands, will take him and his wife to Perce, Que., Gros Morne National Park and Newfoundland, among other places.

Rainbow says that he’s also looking forward to seeing the wild horses of Sable Island and getting a taste of France in the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.

It’ll be an extra-special trip because Rainbow and his wife have been wanting to see the East Coast since they immigrated to this country about 50 years ago.

“It’s been on our bucket list since we came to Canada,” he said. “We always thought about going on a trip across the country but we never did.”
