Get out the sombrero. This fiesta is all about partying for a purpose, says Anne Marie McKenzie.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Sea to Sky Corridor program supervisor is organizing a Wii Bowling tournament, Mexican-style.
"The whole night will be filled with fiesta fun," McKenzie said.
The April 21 event is a part of a six-week Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) fundraising campaign sweeping the Lower Mainland. BBBS Sea to Sky Corridor has 135 youth between the ages of 7 and 14 in its programs. The aim of the fiesta is to raise enough money to support 150 kids in BBBS.
The agency is always in need of volunteers to help run its many services, which include everything from the agency's traditional mentoring program to its in-school programs and its Fresh Bunch initiative, which is in partnership with the Sea to Sky Community Service's Fresh Families.
There are three ways to join in the fun taking place next week. Individuals and companies can sponsor the event or a Wii station, which will be set up like a bowling alley. McKenzie is also on the hunt for prizes donated by local businesses to hand out to top fundraisers at the party.
"We have some great prizes already," she said. "There's Outlimits Paintball tickets, Columbia backpacks, Live at Squamish tickets."
But the most important part of the event is entering a four-person bowling team, McKenzie said. To partake, each player must raise $25.
The family portion of the day kicks off in Brennan Park Recreation Centre's auditorium at 2 p.m. At 6 p.m., it's time for the adults to have their fun. Everyone 19 and older is invited to enjoy a margarita or cerveza and pick up a Wii control.
