Brackendale buzzes with Fall Fair fever

Many, many volunteer hours have gone into making the 16th Annual Brackendale Fall Fair tomorrow, Saturday (Sept. 11) a grand success. The location is the Brackendale Farmers' Institute Park on Government Road and gates open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The location is the Brackendale Farmers' Institute Park on Government Road and gates open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The opening ceremonies led by the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe Band begins at 11 a.m.

Admission to the Fair is $4 adults, $3 teens 13 to 19 years and $2 seniors and youth ages six to 12 years. It is free for kids under five years old.

Thor Froslev said a record 68 vendors will be on site this year as well as zucchini races, hay rides, mini-golf and games for all ages and a variety of animals to see and pet.

A great line up of entertainers includes our own Norman Foote who will be on stage from 2:10 to 2:50 p.m. Go to the Fair hungry, as a great variety of tasty food will be served up at many locations on the grounds.

The Symphony of Steam at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park tomorrow, Saturday (Sept. 11) and Sunday (Sept. 12) is a must-see. The main attraction, of course, will be viewing and riding on the Royal Hudson. Tour through the new CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre and tour through the recently restored PGE Troop Sleeper car #722.

Check out the many special exhibits, classic cars and take a ride on the mini-rail.

Paws for a cause takes place in many communities across the province an in Squamish, Paws for a Cause will be held on Sunday (Sept. 12) at the Squamish SPCA shelter at 39901 Government Road. Registration starts at 11 a.m. and the walk begins at noon. Events are planned throughout the day until 3 p.m. For more information or to register, visit spca.bc.ca/walk.

Fifteen WOW riders are going to Bellingham on Monday (Sept. 13) and those people are asked to meet at Canadian Tire at 10 a.m. to plan their own ride. For more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

Celebrating birthdays this month at Hilltop House on Wednesday (Sept. 15) at 2 p.m. are Mary Crowston, Gladys Wood, Michael Nagy-Deak, Dorothy Zimmerman, Mary Belliveau and Earl Cannon.

The Afternoon Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will discuss the book, The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill on Tuesday (Sept. 14) from noon to 1 p.m.

The free workshop sponsored by the Squamish Environment Society will be held on Sunday (Sept. 12) for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer interpreter with the Squamish Estuary Education Project. In turn, they will lead guided walks and share their love of the Squamish Estuary. No previous experience or training is required. Meet in the Skylight Room at the Howe Sound Inn at 8:45 a.m. on Sept. 12. This is a full day from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and a bagged lunch or lunch in the Inn restaurant is recommended.

The Over The Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the Alice Lake Road at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 14) for a Wonderland to DeBeck's Hill (steep) hike. Call Heather at 604-892-9003 for more information.

Local resident graham Fuller has written a new book called A World Without Islam and he will be discussing this book at the Squamish Public Library on Thursday (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m. This book is certain to inspire debate and reshape the way we think about Islam's relationship with the West.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 15).

While at the Brackendale Fall Fair check out the Squamish Hospice booth. Along with homemade preserves and hand-made items, information will be available on the role of Hospice in our community.

The Caregiver Support Group is offered to people caring for an aging relative or loved one who has such an illness and who may be at home or living in a facility. The group provides a safe and confidential setting, which encourages people to share and also feel supported. The annual general meeting for the Squamish Seniors' Centre will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 15) at 1:30 p.m. and all members are requested to attend.

The Squamish Philosopher's Café is a community-driven forum where local, as well as global issues can be discussed and debated in comfortable settings, and in a round-table format where everyone I encouraged to respectfully express, and support their views. The bus tip for seniors going to the Coquitlam Casino or a visit to Burnaby Mountain for a walk-about is set for Wednesday (Sept. 22) and the cut off date is Sunday (Sept. 19). The Alzheimer Society of British Columbia is sponsoring the Family Caregivers Series 2010 and it will be held on three Saturdays, Sept. 18, 25 and Oct. 2 and 16 in the Squamish Seniors' Centre from 9:30 a.m. until noon each session.
