Brennan Park bustling during Games

Kids have plenty to do while school's out

The Brennan Park Recreation Centre will be a hub of activity starting Feb. 12, with no one missing out on Olympic action thanks to a massive TV streaming live Olympic Games coverage every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

"We welcome families to come and watch anyone to come and watch any of the Games that will be shown live on the TV," said Tamsyn Morote, the Olympic program co-ordinator.

And parents looking to enrol their children in a half-day or full day of camp during the Olympic Games timeframe, can do so online or in person at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

Starting Feb. 12, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Brennan Park Arena will host a free open skate for anyone dressed in red. Morote said the idea of wearing red is a part of a Canadian Olympic Committee initiative called Paint The Town Red.

"We're just encouraging everyone in town to do something, put up red Christmas lights or put a red banner around your tree or put up a red poster, anything."

The recreational facility will also hold its own opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. before the official Olympic Games ceremonies start in Vancouver at 6 p.m.

Also on Feb. 12 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., the centre will run a family fun zone, with face painting, Olympic Games themed crafts, balloon twisting and more.

Saturday Feb. 13 and Feb. 27 kick off with an Elks pancake breakfast and starting at 10 a.m. The public is also invited to add their own creative flair to an Olympic sea to sky inspired mural being painted by a handful of local artists.

"That will actually go up in Brennan Park and that will be something that stays here and our reminder that we were part of the Olympics," Morote said.

Also on Feb. 13, skaters of all skill levels have a chance to mark up the ice alongside the Squamish Wolfpack from 10:40 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Locals and visitors can also enjoy a winter farmer's market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday Feb. 27 the market will run until 7 p.m.

On Monday Feb. 15 and Thursday Feb. 25, families are encouraged to bring a board game to the recreation centre and watch Games coverage while playing games from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Squamish Skate Club is scheduled to showcase the work of talented figure skaters at a gala performance at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the club.

Saturday Feb. 27 marks the finale of the Wild At Art Spirit of Squamish series with an 11 a.m. Paul Coulter Brown performance, followed by The Overcomers at 1 p.m. and Radio Karma at 3 p.m.

The Olympic mascots will be at the centre between 4 and 4:30 p.m. that day, followed by the live streaming of the men's hockey bronze medal game.

The men's gold medal hockey game will be streamed live on Sunday Feb. 28 followed by the closing ceremonies.

With the exception of the regular season Squamish Wolfpack hockey game and the Skate Club gala, all of the events at Brennan Park are free of charge.
