Busy weekend on tap

Special kudos to the relay co-ordinator Lisa Merrick and to all the teams who have given so much of their time and talents in fundraising.

What a busy weekend we have coming up! Hope you will have the annual Squamish Garden Tour on your schedule. It is sponsored each year by the Squamish Gardeners and the self-guided tour will be held on Sunday (June 26) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the Adventure Centre, Garibaldi Nurseries, the Village Green Garden Centre and the Squamish Public Library at $15 each.

The Squamish Renaissance Retirement residence at 38225 Third Ave. is sponsoring a Lunch and Learn Series covering a variety of health and common interest topics for seniors. The subject on Wednesday (June 29) will be arthritis and joint pain and the speaker will be Dr. Leanne Embree, patient care pharmacist. Lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. and the cost is $6, payable at the door. Please reply to Tanis at (604) 848-2000, ext. 5002 if you are planning to attend. The presentation is from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Future events are planned for July 27 to Aug. 24 and are sponsored by London Drugs.

The Summer Reading Club at the Squamish Public Library will be starting soon and on Wednesday (June 29) from noon to 4 p.m., an information session will be held. This will give young readers a chance to pick up their reading record and find out about weekly events. On this day you will meet Summer Reading Club staff and also enjoy refreshments.

Connecting with your Higher Self is a Chants and Drums workshop for women and will be held at the Howe Sound Women's Centre at 38021 Third Ave. on Thursday (June 30) from 7 to 9 p.m. Please RSVP to [email protected] or phone (604) 892-5748. The minimum suggested donation is $10.

It is free Hot Dog Day at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (June 30) starting at noon and everyone attending is asked to bring a salad, fruit, snacks or baked goods. Take along a senior who hasn't been to the centre yet!

Canada Day celebrations will be held on Friday (July 1) at the downtown pavilion site and Stan Clarke Park on Cleveland Avenue. Events begin at 10 a.m. and include the kids' zone, a car show, live music, an outdoor movie and fireworks to finish off the evening. The official opening of the O'Siem Pavilion takes place at 1 p.m.

A multicultural Canada Day celebration will be held at noon at Totem Hall on Friday, July 1. This will mark the 19th year of celebrating this special day with the community. Prayers will be held from noon to 1 p.m. with interfaith churches taking part, and this will be followed by the traditional feast. The day also includes drumming and singing and a variety of entertainment.

The Squamish Public Library's Adult Evening Book Club will be discussing The Help by Kathryn Stockett on Thursday (June 30) from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

A new book club at the library and sponsored by the Friends of the Library will meet on Tuesday (June 28) from 7 to 8 p.m. in the library meeting room. The club will discuss books with the theme of personal growth and if you have read Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, you are welcome to attend.

Seniors interested in going on the Van Dusen Gardens/Queen Elizabeth Park bus trip on Thursday (June 30) are asked to call Elaine at (604) 898-5463 by this weekend.

The Mystery Dinner Theatre fundraiser at Nita Lake Lodge in Whistler on Thursday (June 30) is being hosted by the Howe Sound Women's Centre. All proceeds will go towards a Women's Drop-In Centre in Whistler. Anyone with items to donate to the silent auction is asked to contact the centre at (604) 892-5748. Tickets can also be purchased there, or online at www.hswc.ca.

Shari Ulrich and her daughter Julia Graff will be in concert at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (June 26) at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and available at Xocolatl and the BAG.

The WOW riders will meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. on Monday (June 27) for carpooling to North Vancouver. A ride through the Seymour Demonstration Forest is planned. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.
