Campaign aims to encourage local shopping

BIA expands its reach
Chief File Photo The Downtown Squamish BIA launches its annual Passport to Shop and Win campaign on Nov. 2.

Give the community a gift this upcoming holiday season and shop local, says the president of an organization representing downtown Squamish businesses.

This year, the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association is launching its annual Passport to Shop and Win campaign. The event runs for seven weeks, between Nov. 2 and Dec. 19. Participants are handed a passport from downtown businesses and collect stamps whenever they make purchases. Once the card is full, the participant will be entered into a draw to win prizes.

“It is going to be bigger than ever,” the BIA’s Bianca Peters said.

The BIA is aiming to spread its wings beyond its traditional roots on Cleveland Avenue. This year, Save-On-Foods and Nesters Market are participating in the campaign, she noted. The overall aim is to encourage growth and popularity in Squamish’s heart, Peters noted. The organization’s mandate is to stimulate and promote the downtown neighbourhood as a vibrant hub of the community. Working together, the enrolled businesses seek to establish downtown as a unique destination and source of local pride.

“We don’t want to limit ourselves to Cleveland,” Peters said.

Every Friday during the Passport to Shop campaign, a winner will be drawn and receive $100 to spend at participating shops. Completed passports can also be dropped off at participating shops. The overall winner will receive $1,000 to spend downtown. The runner up will go home with $500 to shop downtown and the third place prize is $250.
