Students in Capilano University’s business certificate and advanced wilderness leadership programs last week were awarded the Linda Carney Memorial Bursary.

The Carney awards, handed out each spring by local businessman Owen Carney in honour of his late wife Linda, were awarded to Sara Bonin and Mackenzie Wade last Wednesday (May 14). Linda Carney was longtime advocate for the Capilano U. (then college) Squamish campus.

Bonin, from Quebec, just completed her certificate in business administration and plans to attend the Cap. U North Vancouver campus beginning this fall to pursue her goal of becoming a pharmacist.

Wade, who came to Squamish to be part of the advanced outdoor leadership program, is graduating from the program this spring. She and a friend plan to develop a non-profit outdoor recreation program to empower women in the Squamish area.

The two were among the recipients of 10 bursaries given to students at the Cap. U Squamish campus each spring. The other award winners:

• Tielle Aberle, Squamish Chamber of Commerce Award;

• Joel Wollenberg, Swan-e-set Bursary;

• Natale Neilands, First Semester Bursary;

• Natasha Segree Hacker, Capilano Program Award;

• Tom Alexander, George Raven Wood Bursary, Capilano University Bursary;

• Mackenzie Wade, First Semester Bursary, CFUW West Vancouver Memorial Bursary.

The Capilano University Foundation, incorporated in 1970, works to advance the university’s mission and support student success through private, public and corporate financial support.
