Dancers make great showing

We are so blessed to have so many talented young people in our community. Hats off to the Howe Sound Secondary School’s musical class and everyone involved in presenting the musical Hair these past two weekends. 

More talent will be on display this weekend when the Still Dancing Dance School presents “The Enchanted Forest” with two performances at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Brennan Park auditorium. Tickets at $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children and are available at St. John’s Anglican Church, the Squamish Adventure Centre and at the door.

The Howe Sound Dance Academy has a series of performances in celebration of 15 years of ballet, jazz, hip hop dance, lyrical and modern dance. The dates are this weekend (June 6 and 7) and June 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Eagle Eye Theatre. Tickets are available at Kaos Kids or for more information, visit www.howesounddance.com. Congratulations also to ballet dancer Sarah Bowers who heads to New York in July to attend the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet.

The West Coast Railway Heritage Park will be filled to capacity when the 10th annual Day Out with Thomas comes to the park this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8) and June 14 and 15. Not only will the kids ride on Thomas, but they will meet Sir Topham Hat and also experience many Thomas-themed activities at the Thomas and Friends Imagination Station in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre. Departures each day are at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30 a.m. and 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the park and also available at www.wcra.org.

On Sunday (June 8), the members of the Squamish Environment Society will meet at the Howe Sound Inn at 7 a.m. for the monthly bird count. The group will be looking for insect-eating birds such as flycatchers and four different species of swallows. For information, call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

The Squamish Gardeners’ annual Garden Tour is planned on Sunday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour, a showcase of 10 spectacular local gardens, will include art and live music in the selected gardens. Tickets are available at the Squamish Adventure Centre, Anna’s Interiors, Garibaldi Nurseries, On the Farm and the Squamish Public Library.

The annual Seniors Society Hot Dog Day is Friday (June 13) at noon in the Squamish Seniors Centre. Come out and enjoy a hot dog, corn and beverage and in return, please take along a small salad or dessert to share. A sing-along of many old favourites will be courtesy of the Side-By-Side Singers. You are asked to sign up at the front desk or call (604) 848-6898. A new Billiards Club meets each Friday at 1 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

The Squamish Historical Society has a membership and film night at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Thursday (June 12) at 7 p.m. The special guest will be Hans Branvold from West Vancouver, who will talk about and show the Hollyburn Heritage Society movie “Diamond Head Chalet — A Family Journey.” The film is a history of the chalet and the Squamish backcountry. The film was shown at the Culture and Heritage Festival at Quest University in early May. Admission is by donation.

During the summer, monthly movies will be shown at the Squamish Public Library and on Thursday (June 19) at 7 p.m. “The Boxing Girls of Kabul” will be shown. The young women are loyal to their nation, yet dare to defy its traditions. The movies shown will be National Film Board productions and attendance for children will be left to the discretion of parents. There is no charge.

The Squamish Environment Society has a special evening planned at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Wednesday (June 18) at 7 p.m. It is entitled “Hummingbirds, Salmon and the Cheakamus Centre” (formerly the North Vancouver Outdoor School). The presenters will be director of educational programs Conor McMullan and teacher Garry Cotter. Learn more about the Cheakamus Centre, the banding program for hummingbirds and the salmon-spawning season.

Nancy Warwick from the Squamish Public Library will have an interesting display of books at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday (June 12).
