District calendar jam-packed

More than 60 events on community's schedule

There's 60 and counting.

The community's calendar is quickly filling up as the District of Squamish has more than 60 event dates in the books. Municipal officials have established a culture of embracing events in town, Mayor Rob Kirkham stated in a press release.

District staff are in the midst of hiring a film and event manager to support further development in this area.

"Recognizing that events bring vibrancy, economic value and exposure to our town we continue to develop meaningful partnerships with event producers to ensure a will for all involved," Kirkham said.

This month, the Squamish Valley Music Festival was splashed across news headlines as organizers announced plans to expand the concert's capacity to 37,000 festival-goers. This would make the event the largest music festival in the Pacific Northwest.

"It can be a tricky tightrope to walk between fulfilling the vision of an event producer while ensuring the event's growth impacts Squamish positively," Kirkham said.

Last Friday (July 5) saw action in Squamish's trails. B.C. Bike Race participants from more than 26 countries spent day six zipping through the community's forests. On Sunday (July 7), more than 200 competitors and 25 relay teams swam, ran and cycled in the 16th annual Squamish Triathlon.

Such events need to work closely with the community to be successful, B.C. Bike Race marketing director Andreas Hestler stated.

"We've had a wonderful experience in Squamish, in fact Brennan Park and the course in Squamish has been the number one course six year's running because of all the people who make it happen here," he said.

Next on Squamish's calendar is the Gearjammer bike race on Saturday, July 20, followed by the Canadian National Championship Kiteboarding Race from July 26 to 28.

Last year the district facilitated 72 events. For more information visit www.squamish.ca.
