A representative from the Squamish RCMP, Coun. Patricia Heintzman, MP John Weston, MLA Jordan Sturdy, Squamish mayor Rob Kirkham, a representative from Squamish’s sister city of Shimizu, Chief Ian Campbell and Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association respresentative Jeff Cooke celebrate the opening of the District of Squamish’s new park on Monday, Aug. 4.

Squamish’s newest park is now open to the public.

On the August long weekend, District of Squamish officials, Squamish Nation leaders, provincial and federal representatives cut the ribbon on a green space that connects downtown to the waterfront.

The municipally owned property is located between Victoria and Main streets along the Mamquam Blind Channel. It includes a pump track — courtesy of the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association — picnic tables, benches and a beach launch for kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.

The lot is valued at an estimated $3.6 million. Last year, the municipality acquired the industrially zoned waterfront parcel through a provincial government program.

The current park is considered “temporary use” in order to open it up as quickly as possible to the community, district officials stated in a press release.

“Long term visioning will take place prior to the district investing in full-scale remediation of the property,” the release stated regarding required environmental clean up work.
