Ease your load, residents urged

District gears up for National Waste Reduction Week

The District of Squamish is asking residents to ease their loads.

From Oct. 17 to the 23, the municipality and local organizations are gearing up for National Waste Reduction Week. This year's theme - Ease My Load.

There's a lot to celebrate, the district's solid waste project manager told council on Tuesday (Oct. 4).

"We have added recycling to the landfills," Rod MacLeod said, noting that in the coming year, the district plans to begin collecting some, but not all, yard waste.

Squamish ReBuild, a non-profit used building supplies centre, is a success story within the community, MacLeod noted, as is the addition of small-appliance recycling at the Queensway depot and Nesters Market, offering a place for people to drop off recyclable Styrofoam.

Building on the momentum, the district, Carney's Waste Systems, Squamish Climate Action Network (Squamish CAN) and other community organizations will ramp up recycling awareness during the proclaimed Waste Reduction Week.

To kick things off, the district is hosting its second annual Re-Use-It Fair at the Adventure Centre on Saturday, Oct. 22. People are asked to bring unwanted, usable items. Everything brought to the event will be up for grabs for free.

"Hopefully it will be as big a success as the one in the spring was," MacLeod said.

The ever-popular Landfill Larry will be around town talking trash that week. He will also attend the Re-Use-It Fair.

The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information visit www.squamishcan.net.
