E.T. to be screened

District to host showing of Spielberg classic on Aug. 29

E.T. is coming to town.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, at 8:30 p.m., the 1983 Steven Spielberg classic will come to life in the O'Siyam Pavilion Park.

The free event, Cinema Under the Stars, is a part of the District of Squamish's downtown transformation initiative which aims to pump life into the community's heart. Downtown summer programming was determined to be a "quick win" to kick start council's aim to revitalize Squamish's core, Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham stated in a press release.

The outdoor cinema is the second free event put on by the district, with the Night Market kicking off the series on Friday (Aug. 16) from 6 to 10 p.m. at Stan Clarke Park.

"The excitement surrounding this first event has been really positive and we're looking forward to building this series into something really meaningful," Kirkham said.

The district hired event producers Shannon Lorenz and Rachel Boguski to develop the summer events program throughout August and September. The initiative is being funded by money set aside in the 2013 budget for downtown "quick wins."
