Fun, bargains on tap at Flea Market

The sixth annual Flea Market sponsored by the Squamish Lions Club will be held tomorrow (April 16) from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park.

Start the day with a delicious pancake breakfast (served until 11 a.m.) and then check out the many tables and exhibits laden with bargains. Another location for great bargains is the kids' toy, clothing and sports sale at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre tomorrow (April 16) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the Squamish Historical Society is hosting the world premiere video The Legend of John Drenka. The location is the Sea to Sky Hotel tomorrow (April 16) at 1 p.m. Admission is by donation and proceeds will go to the Squamish Log Books project at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park.

The Squamish Firefighters are holding a car wash tomorrow (April 16) from noon to 4 p.m. in the Squamish Station Square. All funds raised will go to support the Squamish Hospice Society. Also mark your calendar for Sunday (May 1), when the annual Hike for Hospice is held.

After a successful Howe Sound Music Festival sponsored by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association this week, the Highlights Concert featuring the winning pianists and soloists will be held on Sunday (April 17) at 3 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church. Admission is $7 each and payable at the door.

The Re-Use It Fair sponsored by the District of Squamish will be held in and around the Adventure Centre tomorrow (April 16) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take your usable items along and maybe pick up an item or two. There is lots going on at the centre, including farmers' market food and vendors, movies, live music and more.

Parkinson's Awareness Month is acknowledged internationally and recently a small, friendly Parkinson's Group has opened in Squamish. Some with Parkinson's live in isolation with their illness and the goal is to provide information about PD and to help people in our community feel less alone with Parkinson's. The support group will meet the first Wednesday (May 4) of each month at 1 p.m. at the Squamish Renaissance, 38225 Third Ave. The group contact is Ursula Dowd at (604) 902-7767.

Well-known garden personality and author Des Kennedy will be the keynote speaker at the Squamish Gardeners meeting on Monday (April 18) at 6:45 p.m. in the Eagle Eye Theatre. Mr. Kennedy will speak about Garden Artistry. The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (April 20) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friends of the Library are holding a book sale at the Squamish Public Library on Saturday (April 30) and Sunday (May 1). Donations of books (excluding Reader's Digest or National Geographic magazines) in good condition can be left at the library anytime.

A new book discussion group at the Squamish Library and sponsored by the Friends of the Library will meet on Tuesday (April 19) from 7 to 8 p.m. to discuss The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

The official Daffodil Day sponsored by the Canadian Cancer Society is Wednesday (April 27). Daffodil pin boxes are available at the B.C. Liquor Store, the Adventure Centre, Brennan Park Recreation Centre, the Municipal Hall, Squamish Library, Mountain FM and Nesters Food Market.

The date for the Squamish Trails Society's annual general meeting is Thursday (April 21) at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue.

A lawn bowling meeting will be held at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (April 21) at 2:45 p.m. when representatives from the Lawn Bowling Association will be in attendance. The Senior Centre will be closed on Good Friday (April 22) and Easter Monday (April 25).

A musical tribute to the Andrews Sisters titled "Company Jump!" is planned on Tuesday (April 19) at 7 p.m. at Greg Gardner Motors. The show is a comedic musical theatre production that showcases the swing music of the 1940s, featuring lively performances by Nadine Tremblay, Andréa Isaak and Marie West. Tickets are $10, which includes the performance and a draw prize entry.
