Golf fundraiser tees off

Breakfast Club looks to expand D.A.R.E. program

The Squamish Breakfast Club is set to score a hole in one with its upcoming golf fundraiser.

On Tuesday (June 4), the business networking organization is hosting a nine-hole tournament at the Garibaldi Springs Golf Course all in the name of D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education. For the past 17 years, the club has backed the local program.

It's always been something that has been exceptionally worthwhile, the club's president David Hildreth said.

This year's program came to a close on May 6, with 225 Grade 5 students graduating from the D.A.R.E. program. At the event at Howe Sound Secondary School, the Breakfast Club received a certificate of appreciation from Squamish RCMP for the amount of work it pours into the cause having raised $2,250 this year.

We received emails from parents and grandparents who attended the graduations, Hildreth said. It just proves how important the program is.

Tuesday's fundraiser tees off at 4 p.m. with 18 teams hitting the fairways. At 6 p.m. the activities will move into The Living Room with a silent auction. The evening is open to everyone, Hildreth said.

The Breakfast Club aims to pull in enough money to expand the D.A.R.E. program to Squamish students in Grade 9 or Grade 12.

We are looking at further options, Hildreth said.

This year, the club has 35 businesses signed up as members. More organizations are invited to join. Besides D.A.R.E., the club donates annually to the Community Christmas Care, a project that provides gifts to underprivileged teenagers in Squamish. Last year, the society pitched $3,000 toward the seasonal charity. The club also raises money for groups such as Squamish Helping Hands Society, and annually hands out a David Hildreth Prevention Scholarship to a graduating student.
