Heartwarming Story: Local heroes rescue owlet in Squamish

Bird now at Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.

This is a story with a happy ending.

On May 17, Squamish's Rick Shaddock and Morgan Campbell rescued a barred owlet in Brackendale.

“We were walking with our dog and just leaving the Brackendale Farmers Institute Park when we came across the fluffy, unfledged owl sitting on a log," the pair told The Squamish Chief via email.

"The little owl would have been easy prey for a variety of local predators."

They called Coastal Wildlife Rescue for advice and were told to take the owlet home in a box.

Then, a local wildlife volunteer would come and transport the owlet to the OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.

"I kept my eyes on the little owl while Rick took our dog home and came back with a large shopping bag full of towels. He scooped up the bundle of soft feathers, beak and tiny claws, and we took the owl home to a quiet room," Campbell recalled.

Within an hour, local wildlife volunteer Sheila Phillips picked up the owl for transfer to the rehab centre.

Rob Hope of OWL, told The Squamish Chief that the owl is now doing very well.

"He is with four foster siblings and a foster dad, Dino. The bird is full-grown, about 10 weeks old," he said.

If anybody else sees an injured or orphaned bird of prey, call OWL
