Most of us are still in flip-flops and thinking about the lake, but the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive 2018 is just around the corner.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, the drive is coming to your neighbourhood.

The project is a provincewide initiative that helps feed thousands across B.C. who rely on food banks to survive. The Squamish drive involves about 100 volunteers who, in 2017, were able to visit 4,000 homes to collect more than 9,000 pounds of non-perishable food for the Squamish Food Bank.

The Squamish Multifaith Association, in partnership with the Squamish branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Squamish Food Bank, co-ordinates the drive.

"With the support of the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive, our food bank can support those of our community that are in need. Many people in Squamish experience food shortages, causing them and their children to go without meals and proper nutrition," said Bodhi McKinney of the Squamish Food Bank.

Between 400 and 500 people rely on the Squamish Food Bank every month, including seniors, those on disability or assistance, employed people on low incomes, families, and children.

On Sept. 15, the donation bags and boxes will be picked up by the volunteers and brought directly to Squamish Food Bank where they will be sorted and stocked.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Geraldine Guilfoyle at 604-848-4807 or [email protected]; or go to bctfooddrive.org.

During the third week of September, community volunteers will deliver flyers and donation bags to residential addresses along assigned routes.

The flyers will offer instructions on how to donate and include contact information for questions.

Simply place donations in bag provided with flyer attached and place outside your door before 9 a.m.
