They are almost there but need a bit more help.

The Squamish Hospice Society has launched a fundraising campaign, “$31 before 31” to drum up the cash it needs to complete the under-construction Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Sea to Sky Community Hospice located between Hilltop House and Squamish General Hospital.

For the rest of the month, the Squamish Hospice Society is asking residents of the Sea to Sky Corridor to donate a minimum of $31 before Dec. 31, which is the last day to make a charitable tax donation for the 2018 tax season.pix

Donors will receive a charitable tax receipt.

Hospices take in those at the end of life, for a short period of time.

There are currently no hospice beds in the Sea to Sky region.

"This is a really important project for us," said Mark McKenzie, chair of the Squamish Hospice.

"We know Christmas is a very generous time. We want people just to think — it is only $31, it is nothing crazy and you are going to get a charitable tax receipt for your taxes next year, too."

The local hospice will take in people from throughout the Sea to Sky and is meant to be like an extension of a person's home. Medical care will be provided by end of life specialists and support will be available for the families of those dying.

The $2.6-million four-bed hospice will have a living and dining room and kitchenette for the family of loved ones staying in the hospice, a private laundry and shower for family members, a quiet and sacred space, and meeting room for hospice programs.

To reach its fundraising goal, the campaign needs another $225,000.

Every dollar donated goes to the new hospice.
