Helping Hands staff and District officials welcomed the start of Under One Roof's construction at the groundbreaking ceremony last year.

To spread the word about an upcoming high-profile social housing and support project, Squamish Helping Hands will be hosting a community barbecue in about a week.

The society is inviting one and all to attend the event at 37930 Third Avenue for a community barbecue on Aug. 16 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., where people can learn about Under One Roof.

Under One Roof will include supportive housing, a food hub, a center for collaborative social services, and spaces for the whole community to gather, eat, connect, and volunteer.

“Collaboration, inclusivity and connections are at the core of Under One Roof,” reads a press release from Helping Hands.

“While housing is key, it is not enough to simply provide housing and food, participants require a social support network, opportunities to learn skills, and discover purpose, and to find a community where they are accepted and understood, and where they belong.”

The idea is to provide a place to live with on-site services to help individuals to transition to healthier, more stable lives.

Helping Hands says this form of housing is the most effective way to end homelessness.
