History hits downtown

Historical Society creates walking tour
Submitted
Squamish now has a self-guided walking tour.

Take a stroll down memory lane in the heart of Squamish.

The Squamish Historical Society has created a self-guided historical walking tour for downtown Squamish. A map of the area has been placed on the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Winnipeg Street. It’s full of historical pictures of buildings that once stood in the area and information on Squamish’s original township. A printable version of the map can be found online at www.squamishhistory.ca.

“The map creates a walking circle tour with the goal of keeping visitors downtown to celebrate our community’s rich past and engage with local businesses,” the historical society’s president Bianca Peters stated in a press release.

The map builds upon informational heritage storefront plaques that were placed around town and created by a partnership between the historical society, the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association (BIA) and the Squamish Public Library a few years ago.

Each sign shows an archival Squamish image and is accompanied by a write-up regarding the photograph.
