How to celebrate Mother’s Day in Squamish

Ideas for how to spend time together with your mom on Sunday
Mother's Day

If you’re looking for a special something to share with your mom this Mother’s Day in Squamish, there are plenty of possibilities.

Take a cocktail class

Learn how to create delicious cocktails with mixologist and sommelier Kelly Ann Woods – proprietor of Squamish’s own distillery, Gillespie’s Fine Spirits. During her mixology workshop, you and your mother will learn the basics of mixology and turn theory into practice as you transform Gillespie’s locally made spirits into cocktails to share. You’ll also take away recipes, tips and tricks for creating successful cocktails at home. Workshops run on various dates during May and June. Please contact Woods for details [email protected] or visit www.gillespiesfinespirits.com.

Please your palette

Take Mother’s Day to new heights with a meal at one of the restaurants of Squamish – or with a family brunch on May 10 in the Summit Lodge at the top of the Sea to Sky Gondola. Surrounded by stunning mountain ranges and views of the Howe Sound, Mother’s Day diners will enjoy a range of delicious food including freshly baked pastries, brioche French toast, poached salmon, grilled vegetables, petit fours and more. Seatings are available from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For details on how to book, visit www.seatoskygondola.com.

Strike a (yoga) pose

Enjoy back-to-back yoga sessions with your mom at the Yoga Studio on Second Avenue this Mother’s Day, and end your weekend feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Practice energizing, graceful movements designed to strengthen and lengthen the body during the Heart Opening Flow class from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., perhaps followed by 75 minutes of gentle unwinding postures in the Heart-filled Deep R&R class, ending with blissful, deep-guided relaxation. Both classes are drop-in. For details visit www.theyogastudiosquamish.com.

Pampering

What better reason to pamper your mom than Mother’s Day? Make it a treat you can enjoy together. There are plenty of places in town to visit or there are services that will come to you. For example, the experienced team at Concrete Blonde Studio (www.concreteblondestudio.ca) offer side-by-side services for pampering in pairs, while the Hideaway Spa (www.squamishspa.com) in Valleycliffe offers a day-long relaxation package, including lunch. For a service that comes to you, try Nails To Go (www.facebook.com/MobileNailsToGo).

Hit the trails

Squamish has many great trails, and there’s one for every level of hiker, from a gentle stroll around Alice Lake, to a more challenging hike up the Sea to Summit Trail. Better still, pack a picnic with all your mother’s favourites, and soak in the beautiful views while pausing frequently to enjoy delicious treats. For a list of parks and trails visit www.squamish.ca.

For those who prefer exploring on two wheels (and there are plenty of moms who do), there are over 100 kilometres of single track trails to choose from in Squamish, from gentle cruises to hair-rising, downhill descents that you can tackle together. For trail maps visit www.sorca.ca.

Paddle

For a more gentle activity, consider stand-up paddle boarding (SUP). It’s a wonderful, relaxing way to experience the water while both you and your mother get a great, all-over body workout. You can rent boards from various locations in Squamish and make up your own adventure, or sign up for a lesson or guided tour. Organized trips include the Morning Cruise and Coffee and Squamish Estuary Tours by the Sea to Sky Adventure Company (www.seatoskyadventurecompany.com), while private lessons are offered by instructors such as Leigh-Anne Kaiser ([email protected]) who will tailor the trip to your needs and experience.

Get creative together

If the rain comes down and stops play outside, head indoors and explore your creative side with your mother. Cedar and Needle Fabric (the pop-up store within Billies Flower House) offer do-it-yourself dreamcatcher kits, doll kits and embroidery kits, while knitters might enjoy exploring the selection of yarn, needles and patterns at Newport Market. For those with a sweet tooth, a visit to Karin’s Kitchen Corner will stock you up with all the tools for a successful baking day.

However you choose to celebrate, just make sure you don’t forget! Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 10.
