Library board gets new members

Facility's use on the rise

There's been a shuffling of seats at the Squamish Public Library's board of directors.

Last month, the District of Squamish council appointed three community members - Deron Johnston, Gordon Mulligan and Gregg Smyth - to the District of Squamish Library Board.

They'll join Coun. Susan Chapelle, Tara Franz, Robin Nish and Tina Sherlock, whose terms expire on Dec. 31, 2013. Also at the table are Pauline Lawrence and Estelle Taylor, whose terms end of 2014.

Attendance at the library is on the rise. According to the district's last report, the children's story time program's attendance increased by 12.8 per cent, with the Books for Babies initiative jumping 19 per cent. Adult and youth reading clubs are also thriving, with growing wait lists, the report noted.

On average in 2011, 48 people visited the library for each hour it was open. During the same time, 73 items were borrowed. Approximately 123,700 people visited the library's website.
