Losing locks, saving lives

Fundraising Balding for Dollars event planned this weekend

Squamish's annual Balding for Dollars fundraiser is planned this weekend, and it's not too late to get in on the fun while helping those suffering from cancer and blood disorders in B.C.

The event, planned on Saturday (May 11) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Squamish Station Mall, features those willing to lose their locks for pledges in support of the Cancer and Blood Disorder Program and Outpatient Clinic at B.C. Children's Hospital.

Hairdressers will be on hand to do the honours, while The Blinking Fish will provide musical entertainment and a bouncy castle will be on site for the kids. As well, a silent auction will include great items such as tickets to the Squamish Valley Music Festival and an outdoor adventure with Canadian Wilderness Adventures. There will also be hotdogs and Starbucks coffee on site, Cathie Greenlees of the Squamish Dragon Boat Association, which is organizing the event, wrote in an email to The Chief.

Local organizers have set a goal of raising $30,000 at the event. As of Monday (May 6), about $3,300 had been raised, according to the www.baldingfordollars.com website.

Those willing to have their hair reshaped, as well as pledges and silent auction items, are still being sought, Greenlees said. For more information, to make a pledge or to offer an item to the silent auction, please visit the website and surf down the homepage to the Squamish event.
