Love of Camp raises $8,000

Fundraiser will send 12 local kids to camp

Squamish residents came out in droves for The Love of Camp fundraiser event on Feb. 14 and as a result, 12 local kids will get a chance to experience life at camp this summer.

Event organizer Vanessa Doak said the event raised more than $8,000. She was overwhelmed by the response from the community.

"We're really looking forward to affording these kids the opportunity to come to camp," she said. "It's going to be such a fantastic summer."

Doak said the event's original goal was to send 10 low-income children to camp and to surpass that goal was a great feeling.

"Our goal was 10 and to surpass this is an accomplishment we couldn't have achieved without all the community," she said. "So, on behalf of the children and all the little lives we're going to change this summer. Thank you."

Two kids from the six Squamish elementary schools will be chosen, with help from local teachers, in the next few months. After the evaluation process, they will be registered at Camp Summit in Squamish for the summer.

Doak also acknowledged the work of her co-organizer Pauline Skiffington, who helped with details of the event and was an integral part of the event's success.

She added that she hopes to make the fundraiser an annual event and continue to give low-income families the chance to experience camp.
