Walk A Mile in Her Shoes will be held June 13 in Squamish.

You’ll be able to see the red shoes coming.

The annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event returns to the streets of Downtown Squamish on Saturday (June 13).

The family event will see men gather pledges and bring awareness to the issue of gender violence by walking a loop around downtown Squamish wearing women’s red, high-heeled shoes, collecting donations along the way.

The Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society organizes the event and last year raised $6,000 for the organization. A total of 39 men, or 78 red shoes, made the walk in 2014.

Men are encouraged to raise a minimum of $25 in pledges before participating, and prizes will be awarded for the top donation earning men.

The participants are encouraged to form teams. Organizers ask walkers to dress as they normally would and strongly encourage uniforms and work gear to be donned during the walk.

The Howe Sound Women’s Centre has been serving the Sea to Sky community for 33 years. The centre is focused on supporting women, children and youth who are in need of emergency shelter, support, referrals and advocacy, and in particular, those who are experiencing high conflict, violence or abuse.

The event will be held on Saturday at Pavilion Park in Downtown Squamish, which is adjacent to the Squamish Farmers’ Market. Registration kicks off at 10:30 a.m., with participants hitting the streets starting at 11 a.m.

Registration and pledge forms for the event can be found online at www.hswc.ca/walkamile.
